Wath welcomed back Veysians who they met last season in the semi-final. Wath were successful on the last occasion and went on to win the final in Darlington. Veysians were obviously looking to continue their campaign and gain revenge for last season’s disappointment.
Despite the loss of captain, Sean Hopper with a serious knee injury and stalwart Joe Earp having to pull out during the warm up with an achilles injury Wath started with pace and power. What would prove to be critical was the inability to convert several half chances into points as their opponents defence scrambled well. Having survived the early onslaught Veysians began to gain greater possession and they were able to turn their pressure into points, scoring converted tries in the 10th and 15th minutes to take a 0-14 lead.
Wath regained some dominance and scored an excellent team try finished off by centre Pat Selkirk. The successful conversion by stand - off, Jack Whitlam closed the score to 7 -14 , after half an hour. Further pressure resulted in Wath moving to 10-14 with an easy penalty for Whitlam, as the referee blew for half time.
A decisive interception pass during a promising Wath attack allowed Veysians to score a try from 80 metres, under the posts. The conversion made the score 10-21 in the visitors favour with 30 minutes left. Wath made several replacements but made a stream of unforced errors as the Veysians showed much greater resilience than in the previous season’s match.
Stand in skipper, Luke Stead, leading from the front managed to force his way over for a try and Whitlam added the extra 2 points to set up a grand stand finish. Wath were 17-21 down with 5 minutes left. Pushing forward into opposition territory Wath made another fatal error and lost possession to Veysians who again went the length of the field to score. Despite the missed conversion Veysians had sealed their victory 17-21 and the Wath players were left dejected as the referee blew to end the game .
An abrupt and disappointing end of the season for Wath but promotion out of a very completive Yorkshire 2 is a great achievement and should not be overshadowed.
