On Saturday Wath upon Dearne RUFC to Moor Road for the first time in a number of seasons, the visitors arrived with a string of wins under their belt in recent weeks and sitting just a couple of places behind Wath in the league standings.
Wath were the first off the mark when stand of Anthony Barratt slotted a penalty in the opening minutes. This was soon countered by Moortown when they crossed for a well taken try outwide to take the lead 3-5.
In the latter part of the first half Moortown continued to push on earning a penalty to increase their lead. In the closing stages of the first half Wath upped the tempo and enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure, with last play called Barratt lined up for a well taken drop goal to cut the deficit to 2 going into the break.
Wath came out attacking and went close to scoring on a couple of occasions, however the Moortown defence held firm and soon they turned defence into attack when the hacked a loose ball down field and raced away to score 6-13.
On 55 minutes Wath had another penalty through Barratt which was soon followed by a well taken team try to give Wath the lead. Centre Andy Hopkin made the initial break through the midfield and found wing Steve Mason in support who raced over 16-13.
Wath held on to their lead until the very last play of the game, Moortown had a lineout 5 metres out and the Wath pack were unable to repel their counterparts and the visitors surged over for the match winning try.
A disappointing result but plenty of positives in particular the performances from the very young players, special mentions to Danny Lord and Charlie Higgins on their 1st XV debut who impressed throughout.
