On Saturday Wath upon Dearne RUFC traveled to Leodensians, Wath knew the match was going to be a tough one and the horrendous weather conditions played a significant part in the game. The rain was constant throughout making it difficult for either side to produce flowing rugby, whichever side played the conditions best would get the win.
The first points of the match went to Wath around the 20 minute mark when full back Anthony Barratt took a penalty infront of the sticks, the first half made it clear this match would be extremely close and it was vital to take any chance at points. Wath dominated possession and territory during the first half but were unable to make it count. Before the half was finished Leo's leveled the score, from a strong break by their scrum half they earned a penalty to leave it all square 3-3.
Thankfully the second half saw the game pick up, both sides becoming more accustomed to the conditions and playing for territory. The first try of the match went to the South Yorkshire men. Skipper Ashley Rothery managed to burst through in midfield eventually earning a penalty, the kick was sent to touch and the pack set up a driving maul just five metres out. They controlled the maul well and prop James McCarthy forced his way over the line 3-8.
Back row Martin Balshaw entered the fray from the bench and immediately made his presence known, a series of powerful runs around the fringes were causing Leodensians plenty of problems and ensuring Wath played on the front foot for the remainder of the match.
Wath further extended their lead with another Barratt penalty going into the final 10 minutes 3-11.
With five minutes to go, Wath took the game beyond doubt, Balshaw burst through the line and charged into the home sides 22, the ball was recycled quickly and Rothery exploited the overlap to race over and score, Barratt added the conversion.
A well deserved and hard fought win for Wath, away from home. Special mention to 18 year old back row Charlie Higgins who was awarded the man of the match in only his second first team game, his work rate throughout the match was outstanding. Final score Leos 3 Wath 18.
