On Saturday Wath made the short journey to Shaw Lane to take on fellow South Yorkshrie men Barnsley. The match more than lived up to the close local derby everyone expected.
Barnsley dominated the first half, whilst Wath went close to scoring on a number of occasions including inside the first two minutes, they couldn’t make the pressure tell and Barnsley were quick to pounce on any Wath mistakes and take full advantage.
The first try for Barnsley came for a superbly weighted chip and collect. 5-0, the next try again went to the home side when the broke down the blindside 12-0.
On the thirty five minute mark Barnsley further extended their lead with a penalty before Wath finally got on the score sheet just before the break with a penalty for Jack Whitlam 15-3.
Into the second half and Wath upped their game significantly, from a dominant scrum Joe Bartlett broke down the blindside and score 15-8.
Wath pushed on, great approach play in the Wath line saw the ball shipped wide, wing Danny Lord swivelled out of the last tackle and pounced over the line. A superb touchline conversion from Jack Whitlam levelled the scores 15-15.
The final ten minutes of the game saw Wath dominate possession and territory in the hunt to grab the win. However it wasn’t to be, a missed drop goal and a close miss with a penalty with the last play of the game meant both sides took the spoils, a fair result.
Final score Barnsley 15 Wath 15.
