They say that lightening does not strike in the same place twice, not true .On Saturday at Ripon it struck four times, during Waths away game, with devastating results.
Wath had four players leaving the field all with serious injuries needing urgent medical attention
Bobby Lazenby, broken wrist, James McCarthy, 3 broken ribs, Adam Clark torn leg ligaments and Ethen Dyson broken ankle and knee. Dyson lay on the ground some 45 minutes waiting for the ambulance before being taken to Harrogate hospital Due to this delay the game had to be transferred to the adjacent second team pitch.
Back to the game itself during the first 20 minutes Wath were pinned back in their own 22 and only some last ditch tackles and miss handling my the home team prevented what could have been a cricket score. Somehow during this period up popped Simon Butterworth who made 50 m before gaining a penalty which Jack Whitlam converted with ease Ripons classy backs soon reduced the deficit and at half time the score was 15- 6 to Ripon. As an aside the game throughout was hard but clean
The introduction of subs McCarthy and Morrisey due to the injuries Wath had sustained did produce some urgency into Waths play. A fine converted try by Ben Cairns and strong running by Andy Barrett raised hopes, however with the demise of McCarthy uncontested scrums were introduced. This situation was a gift to Ripons back division as they increased their lead. Wath never stopped trying and did score a late try by Andy Hopkins converted by the ever improving Whitlam
The unsung hero of the afternoon was Alice Smith Waths Physio who went well beyond the call of duty to administer her care
