Wath in Mud Bath
On a cold and dank February afternoon Wath entertained a much larger Roundhegian’s team whose playing style appeared to suit the soggy conditions perfectly. However, what the home team lacked in size they made up for in teamwork and determination.
Following a penalty from the opposition that drifted just wide of the posts Wath’s young fly half, Jack Whitlam, slotted a kick to give his side a 3- 0 lead.
As conditions underfoot deteriorated, Roundhegians continued their forward onslaught which was continually repelled by Wath’s heroic defence until yet another pick and drive got over the line, near the posts. Surprisingly, the relatively easy conversion was missed.
The pattern of the game remained the same but a rare period of attack resulted in a penalty to Wath. Again Whitlam defied the slippy conditions to edge Wath back in front 6-5.
For the rest of the game the away team continued to batter the Wath defence which defiantly remained well-organised and brave. The South African referee from the Manchester Society managed the game sympathetically in increasingly muddy conditions.
Late in the game Roundhegians spurned several kickable penalty opportunities, convinced they would force their way over the line but Wath held firm and eventually made a great break to finish the game on the attack. A great team performance gained Wath the points and increased confidence for next week's visit to Pontefract.
