Pontefract 31 Wath upon Dearne 10
Waths unbeaten run in 2017 ended at Pontefract on Saturday.
This game was always going to be a daunting task for Wath not made any easier by several of their players enjoying themselves skiing in France and one player unavailable because he had just had a new tattoo. To add to these woes Adam Clark wasn’t told he was playing at Pontefract he was left at Wath a phone call and a fast car saw him arrive within a minute of kick off.
Pontefract are still in the hunt for promotion and fielded a very strong and high scoring side. In fact their line out jumper soared higher than a salmon going up stream to its spawning ground
In the first half the home team only managed two tries, due to some last ditch tackles by Wath led by Ben Cairns example, also three points were gained by another fine penalty by Jack Whitlam. H T 12 3 TO Pontefract.
However the second half belonged to the home side, their slick handling and direct running resulted in three tries. Wath managed to keep the score respectable due mainly to the ever enthusiastic Joe Earp and Joe Parry who could be the find of the season.
The game was admirably refereed by a lady who helped Waths cause by issuing a yellow card to the substituted Waths prop which resulted in uncontested scrums. This situation eased the pressure on Wath and a fine try By Joe Earp reduced the deficit to a final score of 31 10 to the home side
Waths Development Team scored another victory against Pontefract A 21 – 5 to retain their second spot in the Yorkshire Merit Championship (S) Table
Next week Wath entertain Yorkshire one side Selby in the quarter final of the Yorkshire cup KO 2-15
