Wath upon Dearne RUFC 1st XV have enjoyed a mixed start to their league campaign. The first match saw Pontefract visit Moor Road and Wath emerge with a 29-24 win.
The visitors burst out of the blocks, catching Wath napping Ponte were over for the first score within the first 2 minutes. This then spurred the home side back to life, tries from Andy Hopkin and Steve Mason followed to give the hosts a narrow lead.
Into the second half and Wath began to pull away, lock Simon Lines entered the fray and as is now customary scored a try from 4 metres out at the back of a driving maul. This was repeated on a further two occasions much to Simon’s delight and everyone else’s dismay . He was, as we all expected insufferable for the remainder of the weekend.
Wath now had a comfortable lead, and unfortunately they let their foot of the gas, in the closing stages the visitors crossed for two tries, which, although deserved did cloud the final score somewhat for the Moor Road men.
Apologies for the shortness of this report, I was not at the game and for those who may have seen the twitter feed whilst entertaining it was somewhat uninformative. Mr Keenan was subsequently suspended but redeemed himself for the U17s Match!
