Wath Upon Dearne RUFC 1st XV bagged a bonus point win on Saturday at home against Heath. The hosts were looking to build upon the previous weeks win and they did so grabbing maximum points from the home fixture.
Both sides took a while to settle into the game but it was Wath who had the first real say, the pack surged close to the line and just 5 metres out, you guessed it, Simon Lines was on hand to grab the plaudits and get the first try.
The second try was one for the backs, Andy Beardshall set off down the wing and produced a fine dummy to sprint close. He was eventually hauled down but Wath recycled the ball quickly and sped it down the line to the opposite wing. Brett Small had some space to work and needed no second invitation to sprint in at the corner 10-0.
Before the half was over Heath got themselves on the score sheet with a well struck penalty, 10-3 at half time.
The Wath pack had the edge in the scrum whilst Heath were dealt a significant blow losing two players to the sin bin in fairly quick succession. Wath made the advantage pay and from a scrum Brett Small was on hand again to sneak over for the third try. With Heath returning to a full compliment lock Richard Hill was then shown yellow during which time they missed a penalty attempt and went close to scoring. However superb defence from Brad Taylor stopped what would have been a certain try.
In the closing stages of the game Wath went after the all important bonus point and with 5 minutes to go they got their reward. The pack set a good platform going close to the line, scrum half Joe Bartlett was on hand to throw a trademark dummy and grab the bonus point try. Final score Wath 22 Heath 3.
