Wath Upon Dearne RUFC welcomed York to Moor Road on Saturday. The South Yorkshire Men were looking to continue their good form against the men in green having beaten them on both occasions last season. Moreover the men in blue were looking to bounce back from last weeks disappointment away at Yarnbury.
It was the visitors who were the first to make their mark, from a strong scrummage their winger squeezed over down the blindside for the opening try.
It was then over to the younger members in the Wath squad to spark a Wath attacked, superb work from James McCarthy and Ashley Rothery earned a penalty which Anthony Barratt stepped up to convert 3-5.
Wath continued to work hard, from a scrum five metres out they crossed for their first try, stand off Barratt received the ball and with little room to work chose the direct route to go through the defensive line and under the sticks 10-5.
Before the half was over Wath had further extended their lead, powerful running from the pack gave them good field position before Ed Melmoth flicked an inside pass to McCarthy, the 21 year old prop burst over for his first try of the season, 17-5 at the break.
Wath came out strongly in the second period, great work in defence from Bartlett earned a penalty which Barratt slotted to further extend the home sides lead. York began to hit back, around the 50 minute mark they enjoyed a solid spell of possession but the Wath defence was able to hold them out.
Wath’s Andy Lintin entered the fray and was immediately in the thick of it, his first run earned another penalty for a high tackle which was converted once again by Barratt.
York crossed the whitewash for the first and only time shortly afterwards, they pressured a Wath kick and retrieved the ball before sprinting away to score under the sticks 23-12.
Wath would have the final say with their third try of the match, they set up a maul five metres out and the pack drove over for the final try to give a solid 28-12 home win.
