On Saturday Wath upon Dearne RUFC welcomed top of the league and unbeaten fellow South Yorkshire men Doncaster Phoenix to Moor Road.
Arguably the toughest test of the season lay in wait for the Moor Road men, and in the opening stages this was certainly the case. As is often the case Wath were apparently still in the changing rooms with the visitors firing out of the blocks and going over for a well worked try early on.
The Doncaster looked a formidable force but it was the young Wath front row of McCarthy, Stirling and Myers who dominated their opposite numbers throughout the match.
However this did not deter Phoenix, on the 25 minute mark they were over for their second try when their full back raced through some poor tackling and over to score. 0-14.
This seemed to spark Wath into life, the pack made good ground before scrum half Joe Bartlett scrambled over for the first try for the home side 7-14.
Before the half was over Phoenix would have their third, and what would prove to be their final score of the match when they broke through the midfield and shipped the ball wide. 7-21 at half time.
Wath began the second half well, Barratt slotted a penalty to cut the deficit. Around the 55 minute mark the Wath scrum set to work, after 3 penalties and one reset the referee finally lost his patience with the Phoenix front row and the outstanding work of the Wath front row was rewarded with a penalty try. 17-21.
The majority of the closing stages saw Wath trying to snatch the win but failing to make possession and territory count, the clock ran out and the league leaders continued their unbeaten run.
