First Away Win

Wath upon Dearne RUFC travelled away to Hullensians in search of their first away win of the season, similarly the hosts were looking to defend their unbeaten start on home turf. Something had to give.

As is frustratingly common it took the Moor Road men a while to get into the game, whilst the visitors took full advantage and raced away for a try in the opening few minutes.

Wath eventually found their feet and were able to put together some strong phases, from just outside the hosts 22 the backs received the ball and inside centre Martyn Bray skipped out of 2 would be tackles to race away and level the scores 7-7.

Wath continued to push on, prop James McCarthy continued his superb form at the scrum, a good platform was set and 5 metres out No 8 Matt Burrows used his strength to battle his way over the line 7-12.

Before the half was out the lead was further stretched for the visitors, Bray barged over for his second try of the match to give a decent 19-7 lead going into the break.

Into the second half stand off Anthony Barratt extended the lead with a penalty this was followed shortly by another to give a seemingly comfortable lead.

Hullensians began to fight their way back into the game, they dominated possession and territory for a considerable period and on 2 occasions were it not for poor finishing looked fairly certain to score. However the pressure eventually told and they crossed for a try.

Complacency appeared to have set in for Wath and it wasn;t long before their lead was cut to a nail biting 4 points when Hullensians crossed again out wide 21-25.

The closing stages of the match did nothing to quell the nerves of the travelling support as Hullensians threw the kitchen sink at Wath in order to snatch the win. However after what seemed an eternity with Hullensians metres from the line the ball was lost forward and hoofed into touch to seal the win for the South Yorkshire men.
