The away side had the advantage of the strong wind in the first half and were able to keep the Wath side penned in their own half. A penalty at a break down gave West Leeds the opportunity to take a 0-3 lead after 7 minutes. Staying on top, the W. Leeds backs went over for a try after 10 minutes but were brought back for a forward pass. Wath did make their way into their opponents half a couple of times but made too many handling errors. West Leeds had most of the territory but didn’t create any chances as the well drilled Wath defence held firm.
In the period just before half time Wath finally built some pressure in the West Leeds 22. Secure set pieces and three consecutive penalties near their opponent’s line resulted in second row Oscar Bramhall crashing over for a try with support from his teammates. Whitlam converted from in front of the posts and the referee blew for half - time with Wath 7- 3 up.
Wath began the second half with great intent and went further ahead on 45 minutes. Backs and forwards combined well and after numerous phases, prop Jake Keogh crossed for his sides second try. Jack Whitam made the score 14-3.
Wath were expected to dominate from this point but further handling errors and robust defence prevented Wath from extending their lead further. West Leeds took advantage of the situation and surprised the home crowd by scoring next. Good handling from their backs put the winger in for a try in the corner. The difficult kick fell short but West Leeds moved to one score, 14-8 on the hour mark.
Wath were made aware they needed to up their game and did respond positively. Within 5 minutes Wath were back in command as centre Harry Armitage accepted an offload from fellow centre to score. Wath were now 21-8 ahead following Whitam’s kick.
The West Leeds tigerish defence prevented Wath from any further score until the 75 minute. Winger Anthony Davies was able to gain Wath’s bonus point, finishing a good move in the backs following a good drive from the forwards. An excellent touch line conversion by Whitlam made the score 28- 8.
Wath earned a bonus point win but never seemed to manage the difficult weather conditions. Despite good defence by West Leeds it felt Wath lacked the killer instinct and were dissatisfied with their performance.
