Unbeaten Wath side travelled to play Beverley, who had yet to register a win The home side missed the chance to go ahead in then second minute when they missed a simple penalty near the Wath posts.
As Wath settled they had the majority of possession and began to threaten the Beverley defence, particularly through Anthony Davies, the Wath right wing. Having gone close twice he finally finished a fine counter - attack by going round his man to score. Whitlam landed a fine touchline kick to put Wath ahead 0-7, after 15 minutes.
Wath continued to dominate possession but after 23 minutes Beverley was the next to score. Finding space through the Wath midfield the full back showed excellent pace to score underneath the posts. The easy conversion levelled the scores 7-7.
Stung by this score Wath hit back immediately, Again, going through several phases they were able to create space on the right again for Anthony Davies to score his second try. Another fine conversion by Whitlam restored Wath’ s lead 7-14.
Wath were unable to turn any pressure into further points and the Beverley backs looked lively when able to gain any possession. After 32 minutes they did enough to create a half chance through the Wath midfield and a good offload allowed them to score under the posts again. Levelling the scores at 14 all with the conversion, the scores remained the same until half time.
Wath produced their best period of play just after the restart. Following a line out near their opponent’s line Wath formed a maul and fed the ball to Burrows who’s pass put back row Alex Butterworth into space and he proved unstoppable to score a well - crafted try. Whitam put his side 14-21, just 2 minutes into the half.
Returning immediately to their opponents half Wath worked the ball to the left before moving it quickly back to outnumber their opponents. A long miss out pass by Whitlam found Burrows on the wing and although well tackled he was able to feed the ball back inside for Davies to complete his hat trick and gain Wath a try bonus point. The conversion by Whitlam opened the gap to 14-28, after 45 minutes played.
Having appeared to have antagonised the referee right from the beginning of the game Wath were regularly penalised and unable to build on their momentum. On 55 minutes Beverley reduced the score to 17 – 28, with a penalty under the posts.
With 10 minutes to go Wath looked to have sealed the win. A loose ball in Wath’s half was hacked forward by full back Dave Laycock and Davies kicked into the Beverley 22 where he was was able to gather it and cross for his fourth try. The missed conversion still meant Wath led by 17-33.
However, the situation changed dramatically. Whitlam was yellow carded in the 71st minute and a minute later second row Arran Tasker joined him the bin. With only 13 men Wath defended manfully but in the 75th minute Beverley made their advantage count and scored a converted try to make the score 24-33.
Wath managed the last 5 minutes magnificently. Over- turning possession they gained a line out just 5 metres from the Beverley line. Keeping the ball for countless phases they ran down the clock until No.8 Burrows took the ball and crashed over to deliver the “coup de grace.” Laycock took over kicking duties and finished the scoring, giving Wath a 24-40 away win.
Wath’s discipline was tested but the leaders did well to keep the game under control. The win puts Wath at the top of Yorkshire 1 and Beverley into the bottom two.
Next Saturday Wath host second placed Dinnington, which should be a thriller.
