The third consecutive away fixture for Wath in 2023 was a short trip to Wheatley Hills. After opening a 19-0 lead in the home game, earlier in the season, Wath were forced to hang on for a 19-18 victory, so were wary of their opponents.
Wath again started brightly and a measured cross kick by stand -off, Jack Whitlam, gave winger Pat Selkirk the opportunity to leap higher than his opponent to claim the ball, before touching down for a quality try. Whitlam’s conversion meant Wath led 0-7, after 5 minutes.
Following a yellow card for a Wheatley player, for a high tackle, Wath were able to take advantage and following a clean break in midfield by Selkirk his pass to centre, Steve Mason put him under the posts for a second Wath try. Whitlam’s left foot made the score 0 14, after quarter of an hour.
On 25 minutes Selkirk was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock on and Wath were forced into a period of defending, whilst a man down. Eventually, Wheatley benefited, as they landed a penalty to get on the scoreboard 3-14, down. Restored to fifteen men Wath responded with a penalty of their own, Whtlam’s kick took the score out to 3-17 after 35 minutes.
Just before half time Wath forced a line out near the Wheatley try line and a clean catch and a powerful break by second row, Luke Stead, proved unstoppable as he added Wath’s third try and Whitlam made the score 3-24 at the break.
The second period began with the Wath forwards making good ground and producing quick ball. The backs were able to capitalise on this and a superb miss pass by Steve Mason gave Selkiirk an easy run in for Wath’s bonus point try. With the conversion drifting wide, after 45 minutes Wath had extended their lead to 3-29.
On 55 minutes Steve Mason was sin binned for a high tackle and the home team gained momentum. Scoring tries in the 60th and 65th minutes Wheatley threatened another come back but due to missed conversions had only closed the score to 13-29.
Back to full strength Wath denied Wheatley any further hope of a win as they scored tries in the 70th and 80th minutes. Both were from 5 metre line outs, both by driving mauls and both by captain Sean Hopper. As both conversions went wide the score finished 13-39 to the away team.
A strong display in the local derby keeps Wath in fourth place in the League and Wheatley remain in the bottom three. Wath are away again next Saturday at Northallerton and need to be ruthless against the team second from the bottom.
