Unbeaten Wath travelled to newly promoted Ossett on a wet, murky afternoon and after just 2 minutes they were given a wake - up call as the home side scored a try in the corner, following some quick handling by their backs. Although the conversion was short , Wath were 5-0 down.
Having to work their way up a noticeable slope Wath began to dominate territory but were made to work hard to retain quick, clean possession. After 15 minutes were rewarded with a kickable penalty and reliable marksman Jack Whitlam reduced Ossett’s to 5-3. Following further pressure prop Sam Levitt crossed the line from short range, and despite the missed conversion Wath took the lead 5-8.
An exchange of penalties between the two kickers left Wath still ahead 8-11, but late in the half a burst three converted tries by Ossett, taking advantage of some suspect Wath defence to put the home side 29-11 ahead at the break.
Despite the loss of back row , Joe Earp through injury Wath were able to re- group for the second half challenge, knowing they had the advantage of the slope in their favour.
Playing the whole of the second half almost exclusively in the Ossett half Wath cut the lead to 29-18 after 55 minutes with a try by Arran Tasker on his return to the club plus Whitlam’s conversion. With 25 minutes left Wath believed they could turn this game round but despite several penalties, scrums and line outs within 5 metres of their stubborn, opponents line, they were unable dominate sufficiently up front, to provide their usual , clinical finishes.
Eventually, Luke Stead scored a try from a quickly taken penalty 5 metres out. A magnificent conversion from the touch line by Whitlam closed the deficit but that was the last play of the game and Wath had to settle for a losing bonus point following their 29-25 defeat.
Disappointment for Wath players, coaches and band of travelling supporters with lessons to be learnt before Saturday’s home game against top three opponents Baildon.
Man of Steel was Arran Tasker for a strong all - round performance on his return from Doncaster Phoenix.
