Following a fumble from the kick off Wath were immediately under pressure from visitors Wensleydale, in their first home game of the season. Defending strongly Wath were able to clear their line and began to work their way into the game.
Dominating territory, Jack Whitlam was in a good position to put his team ahead 3-0, after 10 minutes with a penalty. On 15 minutes winger Anthony Davies scored his first try for Wath , following an attack involving both forwards and backs. A difficult conversion went wide but Wath had moved 8-0, clear.
Continuing to have the majority of possession, Wath , through Whitlam were able to add two more penalties before half time and went into the break 14-0.
Maintaining their superiority Wath were guilty of not finishing several half chances. Eventually, skipper Sean Hopper led the way to break clear and score under the posts. Whitlam’s conversion put Wath a comfortable 21-0 ahead on the hour mark.
Wensleydale fought their way back into the contest and following a period of pressure scored a try from close range. A successful kick made the score 21-7, with 10 minutes remaining. Neither side made any further chances and the game finished with Wath winning by the same score 21-7.
Another confidence boosting win in their Y1 campaign, but Wath have not really been tested and will need to be more clinical in taking chances when on top.
