Wath Upon Dearne travelled away to bottom side Goole well aware of the challenge the home side would put down after the encounters with them last year in Yorkshire 3. This proved to be the case as Wath went into half time with a slender 8-3 lead. Wath would begin on the front foot but the tenacious home side defence was proving difficult to breach, Wath would however gain a penalty for their endeavours slotted by fullback Anthony Barratt. Keen to match the Goole defence lock Richard Hill put in a big hit on the homesides fullback following a solid kick chase but nothing would come of it for the Moor Road men. Goole went on the attack and from the resulting pressure earned a penalty that was missed. The possession would change hands fairly frequently in the next period, Waths only chance coming from a break by centre Steve Mason but the last pass being out of reach. Not to be outdone the Goole 6 burst through the midfield and looked clear to the line, wing Dale Jackson had other ideas and put in a superb covering tackles that stopped what looked to be a certain try. Goole would continue to push but the Wath defence held out. A Goole high kick was fielded superbly by prop Dean Hardcastle and from the resulting quick ball Mason sold a dummy on his opposite number and raced over to score. Before the half was out Goole would get on the score sheet with a penalty.
Into the second half and things did not start so brightly for both sides as lock Simon Lines and the Goole 8 were sinbinned. It was however the visitors who would begin to turn the screw. A stunning maul starting just outside the 22 proved unstoppable and back row Joe Earp dove over, despite the pleas from his supporting prop Brendan Angel to give him the ball! No 8 Matt Burrows began to break a number of tackles and centre Andy Hopkin was beginning to find gaps in the midfield. From one such break replacement fullback Ashley Rothery slotted a penalty. Rothery would make the next break a trademark weavey run seeing him make good ground, backrow Arran Tasker was in support but the Goole cover defence proved strong. Wath did however recycle the ball and a great team try with the ball passing through numerous hands was finished of by Mason in the corner. Not to be outdone by Lines hat rick last week Mason would grab his own close to the final whistle to secure the 4 try bonus point. Final Score 3-26. Big thank you to Goole for a good game and superb hospitality afterwards. Next week Wath face Ripon away.
