Burrows bags a hatrick

On Saturday Wath upon Dearne RUFC 1st XV welcomed Knottingley to Moor Road, this game would also be the final one on our “beloved” pitch until April as we move over to the side of the Cricket field on a decidedly better playing surface. Mr Scherdel was supposed to be taking notes to aid me in writing this report in my absence from the game, but twenty minutes in he realised he had forgotten. Given that we had scored 3 tries by then the Corns family came to the rescue to help me write this, so if there are any inaccuracies blame them :).
There were a few changes to the squad this weekend with squad rotation and alike, Arran Tasker and Brett Small drafted in, Andy Hopkin was back from illness and with Andy Barrass on holiday Ashley Rothery switched to stand off. Wath came firing out of the blocks; excellent support play saw Captain and Number 8 Matthew Burrows over for his first try inside the first 5 minutes. The home side continued to push on once again the front row of Huw Jones, John Ball and Dale Harrison had the upper hand over their opposition and from a 5 metre scrum Burrows controlled the ball at the back to dot down for his second inside 10 minutes.
Knottingley began to hit back, their fly half intercepted in mid field and raced into the 22. However the Wath scramble defence was impressive and from the ensuing ruck the ball was returned to Wath and the pressure relieved. Next up powerhouse wing Steve Mason was on the score sheet, Another solid scrum saw Joe Bartlett make half a break, he threw a trade mark dummy before spinning the ball out to Mason who had too much pace for the opposition and raced over. Wath were enjoying much of the possession and Hooker John Ball looked to have scored out wide but the try was rightly pulled back for crossing. With 5 minutes of the half left to play Wath bagged the four try bonus point, centre Andy Hopkin hit the line at pace, wrong footed the Knottingley full back and scored under the posts. Half time score 28-0.
Into the second half and Wath kept their foot on the gas, Ashley Rothery floated a huge pass out to Mason who looked a certainty to score, however the ball just floated forward and so was pulled back. The Wath scrum earned another penalty and from the 5 metre lineout the pack set up a powerful maul and Prop Dale Harrison surged over the line. Full back Tom Quinn continued his outstanding form with the boot, missing only one conversion, this proving to be close and from the touchline. Next up John Ball burst through a tackle inside the 22 and raced over the whitewash. Burrows grabbed himself a hatrick with the next score; he hit the defensive line from a set move and burst over to score. The final score took Wath past the 50 point mark centre Shane Brown broke one tackle and had the pace to speed away for the final score 54-0 to Wath. Wath were pleased with this performance, there are still areas that need work but all in all it was a good performance and the coaches were particularly pleased at keeping a clean sheet. Burrows was awarded the man of the match for his powerful running and resultant hat-rick. Wath had four senior teams out this week, and came away with 3 out of 4 wins. The Development XV continued their unbeaten start to the season, with a 36-11 victory away at Wheatley Hills. 18 Year old wing Connor Powell belied his size, tackling out of his skin, on one occasion in spectacular fashion on the huge opposition centre. Powerhouse centre Andy Lintin proved a force in midfield, linking well with fellow centre Sean Power and experienced openside Steve Wesson proved a vital link between the forwards and the backs. But for his outstanding display in both attack and defence Back Row/ Hooker Elliot Morgan was awarded the player of the match. Player/Coach Steve Clegg said of the young side, “Everyone performed today, all the lads in the squad contributed to a great game.” The Third XV powered to a 35-7 win over Doncaster Phoenix 2s with centre Sean Hearne putting in an outstanding performance and celebrating his 18th Birthday in style scoring four tries. The Fourth XV faced a formidable Sheffield side and went down 88-0.
