This was going to be one of the hardest games to date for the 2nds. Their cause was not helped as they travelled with only 15 players. The team had called up Bob Higgins from the 3rds to play his first game of season in front row. Scunthorpe had a full squad including several members of their 1st.XV squad. The game was played on the 1st XV pitch which is one of the widest in the area. The home team were very well organised and put massive pressure on the Wath pack from the start. They had scored 3 tries in 15 minutes, Wath scored a penalty on their only excursion into Sunthorpes half. Scunthorpe made changes and scored again before halftime. Wath again scored a penalty kick from a rare incursion into home territory, Half time score 24-6.
In the second half despite being totally outclassed in the set piece Wath defended well, Charlie Higgins was outstanding ably supported by Max Reader and Adam West. The backs tackled well and held for long periods. The determination to cross the line following a surge from the backs lead to Adam West going between the posts from a cheeky reverse pass from his brother Jim. Sean Power slotted the conversion giving him a 100% kick rate. Scunthorpe made wholesale changes and the game went away from Wath as fatigue started to show against fresh legs. Four more tries were scored out wide despite despairing tackles, the score would have looked worse if the home teams kicker had slotted more than 3 conversions. Wath will look to regroup in time for Dinnington next week
