Wath 2XV 21 : 5 Pontefract 2XV

This was a much changed 2XV that faced their close rivals from Pontefract. In the first fixture of the season Wath ran in 12 tries and won 0-62. Many of that team were representing the 1XV this week and therefore many new faces were on show. With 30 minutes to go before K.O. Wath had only 14 players, and two of those were travelling from Wakefield railway station due to a navigation error at Sheffield station. They arrived just in time. However Corey Brown turned up on leave from the army, and Luke Stead got his boots on for the first time this season following his major knee injury.
From the start Luke looked like he was taking ‘Billy Vunipola’ tablets with a powerful surging run, which led to an early score, converted by Brad Parker. The game was fast paced and although the Ponte pack were much larger Wath held their own in the loose. Henry Roberts and Luke Harrison were outstanding in defence. The attacks eventually led to another converted score, with Reece Tingle linking his forwards and backs well. Half time 14-0.
The Pontefract team were far more resilient and played far better than in the first fixture and put plenty of pressure on the Home team. Wath managed another converted score playing uphill, but this was countered by a deserved score from the visitors late in the game. Played in really good spirit and a credit to both clubs.
This win keeps Wath in second place in the table with the league playoffs decided by positions on 18/3/17
