Wath 2XV welcomed top of the table, unbeaten Sandal 2XV to moor road. The Wath team was weakened by late work and injury call off’s in the morning and had only 14 players 40 minutes before kick off. However the arrival of Alex Anders following his 3 week lay off, was a bonus and meant the team took the field with 15 men.
From the start Sandal attacked, their impressive No. 8 controlling the pack and putting in some surging runs from the base of the scrum. Wath defence held out, but on 11 minutes conceded a penalty 30m out. Sandal took the points. The game was being played in the middle of the field, the Wath scrum was impressive and put huge pressure on the set piece, Sandal being driven back regularly. Wath had several attacks but poor handling did not gain any points. In the last play of the half the Sandal fullback picked a superb line broke a tackle and went over for a try. Converted 0-10
Second half started with a tremendous clearance kick from the Sandal 10 which went into touch on Wath 5m line. The line out was lost and the visitors crashed over for a try 0-17. Wath then started to play with more precision, Adam Clarke made some impressive runs, Ben Hartley was a handful both in attack and defence. However the efforts were not being rewarded. Eventual pressure led to centre Sean Power bursting through to touch down out wide. 2-17. Sandal obviously did not see the game as a foregone conclusion. They opted to kick for points twice when awarded penalties within 30m of Waths line. Both missed. The temptation to go for bonus point win was not in their mindset.
Wath’s very young back row, two 17 year olds and a veteran 18 year old loose head at 8. tackled ferociously and the tight five worked as hard as ever. Lewis Hewitt in his first 2XV fixture this season giving full 80 minutes. The man of the match award for Wath went to Sam Levitt, his first 80 minute game of the season, powerful in the tight and excellent in the loose.
Wath were never out of the game and look forward to the return fixture later in the season.
