Looking to bounce back from a beating last week at Pocklington, the 2XV this week faced a very tough game against the always strong Scunthorpe 2XV. The team took the field this week with 3 subs, which were needed as half the team had been at 1XV skipper Adam Wests Wedding the day before. Good for Carbo loading, not so good for clear heads. The game started with good pressure from Wath, powerful driving and good pick and go. The last pass seemed to go astray however. The effort were rewarded on 7 minutes with Adam West touching down out wide. 5-0. Scunthorpe now had a lengthy period of possession and score 2 impressively quick tries from fleet footed back play. 5-12 at half time.
In the second half Scunthorpe continued to mount pressure, And from driving lineouts managed to force their way over the line for 2 more scores. Wath did not roll over, and continued to pressure the visitors. From one passage the ever impressive Max Reeder scored out wide. 10-22. Wath now turned up the wick and put the line under pressure, however a mixture of imprecision and good defence stopped most attacks. Eventually Jonty Morrissey crashed over to get the score to within 7 and a bonus point. For the last 5 minutes Wath tried their best to get at least a draw and with the last play were stopped just a metre short. Final Score 15 – 22.
The result was probably a fair reflection of a hard fought but sporting game.
